Mechanical (preliminary) processing of forgings

Forgings – quite demanded type of metal rolling. They are draft blanks that correspond very precisely to the dimensions and shapes of the part. To give the forging the required dimensions, it is subjected to mechanical processing, which is also called preliminary. In turn, heat treatment (hardening, tempering, annealing, etc.) is also called final.

Types and features of pre-treatment of forgings

Mechanical (roughing) processing of forgings is carried out in machine shops. They process workpieces of both round and square profiles. There are these types of preprocessing:

• deep drilling – formation of deep holes in the part (large ratio of diameter to depth);
• boring – alignment of the geometric dimensions of the part, giving it an exact shape;
• polishing and grinding pipes, cylinders, bushings, rings and other products in order to improve the quality of their surfaces.

Equipment for machining of forgings

All of the above processes are carried out on special high-tech equipment.

• Lathes – the most common machines for the machining of forgings. They process parts with a diameter of up to 3200 mm, a length of up to 17 m and a weight of up to 100 tons.
• Longitudinal planers allow you to process the surfaces of square profile blanks. Maximum length – 6000 mm, section 2000x2000 mm.
• Drilling units are designed for drilling holes up to 116 mm in diameter.
• Turning and turning machines are used to process large round forgings (up to 6500 mm in diameter).
• The boring units are used for boring round parts with a diameter of 60*800 mm and a length of up to 18 m.
• Milling machines are designed for surface treatment of square section forgings (up to 850x850 mm, length up to 3800 mm).
